This is what I have, but my previous laptop with a much lower spec worked fine too.ġ7″ Apple MacBook Pro, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, Intel i7 CPUĮxternal USB Disk – the bigger the better Who knows, if you can demonstrate to your boss the benefit of labs-on-laptops you might find yourself getting an upgrade. The Bill of Materials below is setting out the best case scenario in terms of equipment, but work with whatever you have. Obviously the more powerful your laptop the more VMs you will be able to run, but a laptop a few gens back with 8GB RAM is more than powerful enough to build some interesting stuff. After that we’ll build up the environment adding more interesting bits and pieces until we have a good platform on which to do some serious labbing. This first post is going to cover the basics of getting up and running. The new Tech Preview of Workstation looks particularly nice (not enough to make me switch to windows though). In actual fact, its probably fair to say that VMware Workstation has many more features than Fusion, so you are likely to be able to do more stuff with Workstation if you are a Windows user.

Most (if not all) of the stuff I am doing here is more than possible on Windows and Linux.

Consequently, these posts will focus on running labs on a Mac and not a Windows or Linux based machine. Lately, I have been building more and more complex labs using VMware Fusion on my laptop and I thought I would write a few blog posts describing the process and tools I use to build labs.įirstly, I use a Mac in my day to day job. Either way, the labs are expensive, power hungry and not exactly portable.

Building complex labs has typically involved us either relying on our employers generosity or spending our time trolling eBay looking for bargains to build a home lab in our basements, garages or spare bedrooms.
